HEY BOY
Mr. Paladin.

PALADIN
Thank you, hey boy.

PALADIN
Do you mind if I join you?

RUDY ROSSBACK
I’d be grateful. There must be some way to work this.

PALADIN
That’s really amazing, isn’t it? The intellect of a race of brilliant philosophers Brought to bear on the puzzle for a child.

RUDY ROSSBACK
You don’t find things like that in saw creek. It’s for my first boy.

PALADIN
How old is he?

RUDY ROSSBACK
He isn’t born yet.

PALADIN
You expect him soon?

RUDY ROSSBACK
Not for awhile yet, but sure it’s gonna be a boy.

PALADIN
I think you’ll find the answer to this one Is in finding the key block. Which is… There.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Oh. Well, hey, that’s clever. Kate’ll sure like this. If she ever gets here.

RUDY ROSSBACK
You again!

PALADIN
Hey boy!

HEY BOY
Anything wrong, mr. Paladin?

PALADIN
Take this one up to the room.

HEY BOY
Follow me.

EVE MACINTOSH
Someone should teach you to mind your own business.

PALADIN
Someone should teach you to shoot a gun. Come on. You’re much more dangerous to innocent bystanders Than you are to the person you’re aiming at.

EVE MACINTOSH
Next time, I’ll get closer. You’re paladin, aren’t you?

PALADIN
That’s right.

EVE MACINTOSH
My name is Eve Macintosh. I was told about you.

PALADIN
Oh?

EVE MACINTOSH
I can use you. I want him dead, and I’ll pay well for it. This time, he won’t get away.

PALADIN
Apparently, you weren’t told everything about me. I’m not a hired assassin.

EVE MACINTOSH
$1,000, Mr. Paladin. There are other men who’d jump at the chance.

PALADIN
Men? I don’t think so. Animals masquerading as men.

EVE MACINTOSH
Oh. I’m sorry. My mistake.

PALADIN
Your biggest mistake was firing at an unarmed man With witnesses present.

EVE MACINTOSH
Rudy Rossback? That was no mistake.

PALADIN
You meant to kill him.

EVE MACINTOSH
Yes, I did. And, uh, you might ask Mr. Rossback If he wants to proffer charges.

PALADIN
Oh, I intend to.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Look, you’ve got to let me out of here! You don’t understand. My wife is out shopping,
and when she gets back And doesn’t find me here, she’ll be very upset.

HEY BOY

Mr. Paladin say you stay, you stay. Or else he be upset.

PALADIN
Hey boy.

RUDY ROSSBACK
I tried to tell him, But the only English he understands is what you tell him.

HEY BOY
Thank you very much. But he no speak English.

PALADIN
Does this woman try to murder you often?

RUDY ROSSBACK
Three times. I get settled, and sooner or later, She finds out where I am.

PALADIN
Hey boy, get the police.

RUDY ROSSBACK
No! No. No charges.

PALADIN
For attempted murder?

RUDY ROSSBACK
I couldn’t do that to her. I’ve done enough to hurt her already.

PALADIN
Never mind the police for now. Just what is it you’ve done to hurt her?

RUDY ROSSBACK
I…Killed her little brother.

PALADIN
You what?

RUDY ROSSBACK
Yes. David. 14 years old. We were at their plantation during the war. Enemy troops foraging. Kid got a gun someplace. Shot the sergeant and pointed it at me.
I…I killed him.

PALADIN
One of hundreds of young boys Who killed and were killed as men.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Oh, I know that. But you can see how she feels.

PALADIN
What about your wife? She know about this?

RUDY ROSSBACK
No.

PALADIN
Sooner or later, you’re gonna have to face up to Miss Macintosh.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Oh, I thought I lost her. I can’t run no more. Not with my wife, the farm.

PALADIN
Well, if you should decide to take her to court, You’ll be able to reach me here at the hotel.

RUDY ROSSBACK
No.

PALADIN
If you should decide, I’ll be here.

CARD

PALADIN
Good night, sir.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Good night.

HEY BOY
I feel very sorry for him.

PALADIN
Hey boy, will you return this weapon to the arsenal, please?

INT. HOTEL CARLETON LOBBY –

KATIE ROSSBACK
Honey? I’m sorry I’m late. I bought the sweetest things…

RUDY
Kate…Kate, not now, please.

KATIE ROSSBACK
I just wanted to show you what I bought.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Kate… Kate…Kate, I asked you, please, Not now.

KATIE ROSSBACK
What’s wrong, rudy? What’s wrong?

RUDY ROSSBACK
Look, katie, we’ve got to leave here now. Now, please, don’t ask any questions. Just sit here and wait for me, please.

KATIE ROSSBACK
All right.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Please. Paladin, I’ve got to talk to you. It’s urgent.

PALADIN
Here?

RUDY ROSSBACK
Not… Not here. Uh, mr. Paladin…Um…Uh, how about hiring you To take care of
miss macintosh for me?

PALADIN
You want me to shoot miss macintosh?

RUDY ROSSBACK
No! No. Aren’t you the one That’s supposed to use his brains sometimes? I’m serious.

PALADIN
Rudy, in my profession, A man’s gun commands a good deal more respect Than his mind does. Handling a gunfighter is one thing. A determined woman like miss macintosh, quite another.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Couldn’t you try? If you’re worried about the money, you don’t have to. I have got over $347.68 in here.

PALADIN
Over $347.68?

RUDY ROSSBACK
Well…Just about $347.68.

PALADIN
And you’d give it all to me?

RUDY ROSSBACK
Every cent. Will you help?

KATIE ROSSBACK
Rudy.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Oh. Oh, mr. Paladin, this is Katherine, my wife.

PALADIN
Mrs. Rossback.

KATIE ROSSBACK
How do you do?

RUDY ROSSBACK
We… Mr. Paladin and I had some business to discuss, And, uh…

PALADIN

And the deal fell through, rudy. I’ll keep an eye on the situation, And if anything starts to develop, I’ll take the job.

RUDY ROSSBACK
Right. Right. Katie, I think we’d better go pack now.

KATIE ROSSBACK
All right. Good night, mr. Paladin.

PALADIN
Mrs. Rossback.

HEY BOY
Oh, mr. Paladin. You have nice time?

PALADIN
Yes, you could say that.

Well, now. Where did you find him?

EVE MACINTOSH
Since I couldn’t count on your chivalry, I hired a knight of my own.

PALADIN
You’ve made a very interesting choice.

EVE MACINTOSH
Paladin, I believe this belongs to mr. Rossback. Would you mind returning it to him for me? With my regards. We’d better start.

GUNMAN
Don’t pay to rush. Might be like for me to come in runnin’ and shootin’.
I aim to take him my own way.

EVE MACINTOSH
Don’t forget. It’s Rossback I’m paying you for.

GUNMAN
Why, sure. I just hope he gets in my way, that’s all .

PALADIN
Mrs. Rossback.

KATIE ROSSBACK
If you’re looking for rudy, he’s not here.

PALADIN
Oh?

KATIE ROSSBACK
I said, he’s not here. What is it you want with my husband, mr. Paladin?

179
00:12:31,483 –> 00:12:33,217
Katie! Dear, don’t bother yourself about it.

KATIE ROSSBACK
But I don’t understand.

182
00:12:39,474 –> 00:12:42,810
This is between mr. Paladin and me.

PALADIN
You’re gonna have to tell her sooner or later.

KATIE ROSSBACK
Tell me what? He’s afraid of you?
Is that it, rudy?

186
00:12:50,852 –> 00:12:54,471
The other’s your business if you want it, mr. Paladin. This is mine. Katie. Into the house, please. Where is she?

PALADIN
On her way here.

189
00:13:06,485 –> 00:13:07,585
Will you help?

PALADIN
That depends on you. You gonna run?

191
00:13:10,989 –> 00:13:12,490
Run? Where to? This is the end, paladin. We’re gonna have that baby. Well, this is our home. Boy’ll need that little horse soon.

PALADIN
You’re planning to stay, then?

198
00:13:34,145 –> 00:13:37,348
I don’t know. Is there a choice?

PALADIN
Yeah, perhaps not, Rudy. Perhaps you don’t have any choice at all. She wanted you to have the pieces. You pretty well will have to tell your wife now, won’t you?

203
00:14:01,306 –> 00:14:04,424
No. No, I can’t. You do it, Paladin.

PALADIN
Mm-mmm. That’s not included in my price.

R
All right.

206
00:14:15,820 –> 00:14:17,521
Come on.

INT. ROSSBACK RANCH HOUSE – DAY

207
00:14:24,563 –> 00:14:26,830
Katie, please! That’s not the way to do it.

KATIE ROSSBACK
She must be out of her mind. You don’t grieve all your life.

210
00:14:31,236 –> 00:14:33,937
Look, I’ve done enough to hurt her already.

KATIE ROSSBACK
You didn’t murder him. Somebody has to help you.

213
00:14:40,512 –> 00:14:42,613
Is it so hard to understand? I just don’t wanna have her hurt on account of me.

PALADIN
You’re a fool, rudy.

KATIE ROSSBACK
A noble fool, mr. Paladin.

PALADIN
You agree with him?

KATIE ROSSBACK
No.

PALADIN
Well, mrs. Rossback…
Excuse me.

PALADIN
She’s hired a gunfighter.

R
Well, that’s different.

Gunfighter removes gunbelt

GUNMAN
I told you, it don’t pay to rush.

EXT. RANCH HOUSE

RUDY ROSSBACK
What’s going on?

PALADIN
Don’t know. But it ought to be interesting. He just took off his gun belt.

EVE MACINTOSH
What are you doing? What are those?

GUNMAN
Never seen a pair of fightin’ spurs? Couldn’t use these on a horse. Tear him to pieces.

EVE MACINTOSH
I hired you to kill him, not to butcher him.

GUNMAN
You see?

EVE MACINTOSH
I won’t have it. Take ’em off.

GUNMAN
Never tell a man his business.

EVE MACINTOSH
This is my business, and you’re gonna do it my way.

GUNMAN
How long would I last shooting down an unarmed man In front of witnesses? There’ll be no shooting with me in the middle. Man gets killed in a friendly fistfight. That’s something else.

RUDY
He still isn’t armed.

K
Rudy!

r
Over ten years, I’ve been running. Always backing away. No more.

GUNMAN
Well, I was told I’d likely have to roust you out. Lady asked me to teach you some manners.

PALADIN
All right! Fight’s over.

K
Rudy? Rudy!

PALADIN
Well, Rudy. You feel better now that you’ve hit somebody?

EVE MACINTOSH
Look, that’s enough. Take the money and go. I’ll finish this my own way.

GUNMAN
Not a chance, lady. I got a personal interest now. Squeamish?

EVE MACINTOSH
Not any more than any normal person.

GUNMAN
Get out there and get a good look. You’re paying for it.

PALADIN
Rudy! Come on. Now, you seem to be determined to kill him. And you seem to be determined to let her. Here’s a gun. That’s a fine gun. Take it. Take it! Blow a hole in him big enough to satisfy even you. At this distance, you don’t have to aim it. Here. You do have to pull the trigger, though. Go on!

EVE MACINTOSH
David!

k
I’m sorry.

EVE MACINTOSH
I don’t want your pity. I don’t want your pity.

PALADIN
Rudy.

r
Mr. Paladin. This is for you. I wish I could make it out for even more.

PALADIN
$347.68. That’ll do very nicely.

r
Thank you.

k
Thank you.

PALADIN
I can’t really accept a fee from both sides. And somehow I imagine that miss macintosh
Is gonna find a way to make up for all my trouble. Bye to the both of you.

r
Bye.
