95-“Day of the Bad Man”

C. Palmer sends for Paladin to clean up Cedar Wells – a place where folks lose at faro, lose their lives and the cattle she tries to sell there. With the help of Laredo Perkins, Paladin hatches an idea of how exactly he can earn his fee.

You’ve had your big day, Laredo Perkins,
And now I’ll put you on that train back east.
But not for money. For humanitarian reasons.

EXT. ON THE TRAIL -DAY

TRAVIS/LAREDO PERKINS
Hold it. Don’t try it, mister. You’re covered.

PALADIN
Well, I’m waiting.

TRAVIS/LAREDO PERKINS
Just ease yourself down, mister. But mighty slow-like. Now over here. You keep them
hands up wide. Go right inside. Move!

CYNTHIA PALMER
Travis Perkins, you put that thing down right now! Do you hear me, Travis?

TRAVIS/LAREDO PERKINS
Laredo. Besides, what if he’s one of Amos Saint’s gang?

CYNTHIA PALMER
Oh, fiddle. Give me that gun! laredo, huh? Your name is travis. And it just might not be so amusin’ If you was the one who was saddled with ‘im.

PALADIN
I’m sure it wouldn’t.

CYNTHIA PALMER
If you knew what I had to put up with ever since he got here…
You just wait a minute and I’ll show you somethin’. Look at this.

PALADIN
The Brimstone Kid. That’s a good one.

CYNTHIA PALMER
Half the trunk he brought from Albany was filled with this. He’s my sister’s boy.
She had ‘im teachin’ school at a young ladies’ seminary. What are you lookin’ for?

PALADIN
Mr. C. Palmer.

CYNTHIA PALMER
It ain’t “Mister.” it’s me. Cynthia Palmer. Hey, you wouldn’t be the fella from San Francisco, would ya? Paladin?

PALADIN
Yes, ma’am.

CYNTHIA PALMER
Well, now, you took care of Laredo… Um, Travis real good.
But how you gonna make a whole town toe the mark?

PALADIN
That the job you want me for?

CYNTHIA PALMER
Yeah. Town is Cedar Wells where I ship my cattle. Last year, six of my men got cleaned at faro. Two more of ’em were killed by Amos Saint and his people. The foreman, while runnin’ away from a purple tiger he seen, made a turn into a horse trough, broke his leg, and near drowned. Sit down.

PALADIN
Thank you. Where was the Sheriff when all this was going on?

CYNTHIA PALMER
Oh, they’re so scared of Amos Saint and his people And so greedy for trail drive money.
They’ve run out every lawman ever set foot in that town.

PALADIN (Goofs his line…calls her Perkins instead of Palmer)
Miss Perkins, I don’t know. The idea of becoming Sheriff…

CYNTHIA PALMER
Oh, now, look. I got me a Sheriff already. Bart Reynolds. What I’m hirin’ you for is to go to Cedar Wells And see that he don’t get run out before my herd gets there. Oh, and… One other little thing. I want you to take Travis and board him on a train goin’ east.

PALADIN
Oh, now…

CYNTHIA PALMER
Now, don’t say no. I’m willin’ to up the ante. The thousand we agreed on and… And 200 more.

PALADIN (Goofed his lines again…calls her Perkins instead of Palmer)
Uh, Miss Perkins, if I take Travis along, It won’t be for the money. It’d be for humanitarian reasons. And the only condition on which I’ll take him is that…This…Doesn’t go along with us.

TRAVIS/LAREDO PERKINS
You know, Paladin, my Aunt’s right. I’m not man enough to do anything but go back and teach.

PALADIN
You really hate teaching?

TRAVIS/LAREDO PERKINS
Well, not exactly, but…I got a lot of theories on how things should be taught. For instance, take Homer or Shakespeare, battles and adventures, even ghosts. I teach it as if it were fun
instead of just with a ruler.

PALADIN
Why don’t you do it?

TRAVIS/LAREDO PERKINS
Oh, because I want something. Something else. I want just one day when… When people
Listen to me as though they believed I was somebody. Whatever happened, I’d never let go of that day. That’d make it last a lifetime.

PALADIN
Well, I suppose every man needs a day like that.
Well, let’s get on with it.
You some of Amos Saint’s gang?

PALADIN
Well, hardly.

79
00:06:17,209 –> 00:06:19,811
You’re right or you’d have me shot dead by now. If you’re lookin’ for a stage, why…Might be next week, might be next year. Saint’s gang shot the line up. Ol’ mr. Reynolds been waitin’ since yesterday.

PALADIN
Bart reynolds?

85
00:06:49,374 –> 00:06:51,575
Sheriff Reynolds?

86
00:06:51,644 –> 00:06:53,878
You got business with me, mister?

PALADIN
Well, I had been hired to see that the good citizens of cedar wells Didn’t ask you to resign.
But I guess I’m a…Little late for the election.

91
00:07:05,724 –> 00:07:07,141
Miz Palmer, huh? You can tell her I’d rather go back to jail Than spend another day in cedar wells. What they need in that town is somebody so much worse Than the whole
miserable grub of ’em, They’ll wish they had ten sheriffs.

PALADIN
I could try that.

98
00:07:21,473 –> 00:07:23,641
They shoot to kill. You ready to shoot your way in? They gotta be scared, mister.

TRAVIS/LAREDO PERKINS
What’s wrong?

PALADIN
You know, back at that ranch when you held a gun on me, I believed it.

TRAVIS/LAREDO PERKINS
Till cynthia busted into it.

PALADIN
Well, cynthia’s not here now and I am. You want your day?

TRAVIS/LAREDO PERKINS
That’s fine.

PALADIN
Now all you need’s a gun.

108
00:08:00,679 –> 00:08:02,613
Mine’s over there.

109
00:08:02,681 –> 00:08:05,616
’tain’t no good to me
or anybody at all.

PALADIN
Oh, yes. This one will do nicely. Mm-hmm. Laredo Perkins, School is about to begin.

EXT. TOWN OF

PALADIN
Yee-hee! yee-hoo!

116
00:09:44,983 –> 00:09:47,218
Anybody killed out here?

117
00:09:49,687 –> 00:09:51,455
Amos Saint back in town?

118
00:09:51,523 –> 00:09:53,224
No. Just a cowboy.

119
00:09:53,291 –> 00:09:56,027
You mind taking your shootin’ uptown a ways?

120
00:09:56,094 –> 00:09:58,029
We’re playin’ blackjack in here.

PALADIN
Mister, you put your fancy coat on.

122
00:10:04,903 –> 00:10:07,471
Uh, n-n-now, just a minute here.

PALADIN
I’m gon’ need me an undertaker along.

124
00:10:15,047 –> 00:10:16,981
Yes, sir.

PALADIN
Everybody out!

126
00:10:28,193 –> 00:10:30,861
Beggin’ your pardon, mister… Huh?

127
00:10:30,929 –> 00:10:34,198
But you’re bound to get shot if you don’t hightail it out.

PALADIN
Oh?

This is Amos Saint’s territory.

129
00:10:36,468 –> 00:10:38,569
When he finds out there’s
another gunman around,

130
00:10:38,637 –> 00:10:40,204
He ain’t gonna like it.

131
00:10:40,271 –> 00:10:42,556
Amos saint.

PALADIN
Now, you gentlemen all
heard about laredo perkins?
Last time he had one of
his men get bumped into,
He burned the whole town
right down to the ground.

135
00:10:57,222 –> 00:10:58,823
What’s going on?

136
00:10:58,891 –> 00:11:01,993
Don’t nobody know who he is,
mayor. You better see to him.

PALADIN
And after he run the town council outta town,
He hung the mayor up
by his toes.
That’s what he done.
That’s what he done.

Whoa.
Outta the way, cowboy.

142
00:11:26,985 –> 00:11:30,320
Well, no. Now, you two
fellas gonna have to move.

143
00:11:30,388 –> 00:11:33,490
The only man I ever stepped
aside for was amos saint.

PALADIN
Amos saint? Now, undertaker,
you go tell those two fellas

145
00:11:37,746 –> 00:11:39,914
That they better
lay down there
Because I gotta get
way up on them steps
And I don’t feel strong
enough to do it this mornin’.

148
00:11:45,687 –> 00:11:48,372
He’s one of
laredo perkins’ men.

PALADIN
Yee-hoo!
We gotta get this town
on a friendly basis.
Nobody havin’ any fun
around here at all. Oh!
Ah. Now, how’s about
havin’ me a drink?
I’ll have a bottle here.
Lovely, just hold this bottle.
Everybody’s gonna drink…
Sit down!

155
00:12:19,972 –> 00:12:22,673
Mr. Undertaker, you get
my friends a drink

156
00:12:22,741 –> 00:12:25,409
So they’ll all be happy, too. Yes, mister.

157
00:12:27,146 –> 00:12:29,580
Mmm. Sinful, you want a drink?

158
00:12:31,550 –> 00:12:33,484
Who is he?

159
00:12:33,552 –> 00:12:35,319
One of Laredo Perkins’ men.
Some of the talk is, they
took over amos saint’s gang,

161
00:12:38,423 –> 00:12:40,858
And they got a whole
army in the hills.

162
00:12:40,925 –> 00:12:42,893
Mmm.

163
00:12:44,896 –> 00:12:46,063
N-now, boys,

164
00:12:46,130 –> 00:12:48,166
Don’t start anything.

PALADIN
Shut up!
Drinks for everybody!

167
00:12:57,759 –> 00:12:59,293
Who’s gonna pay?

PALADIN
It’s all on laredo perkins.
He may just buy this place, he
doesn’t decide to burn it down.

170
00:13:06,250 –> 00:13:08,185
Throw him out.

PALADIN
Them two fellas just keep
bumpin’ into each other.
Ain’t that the darndest
thing you ever saw?

173
00:13:34,412 –> 00:13:36,664
I’m really glad
to meet you, mr. Perkins.

PALADIN
Oh, honey,
I’m not laredo perkins.
I’m just a hired flunky
works for him.

176
00:14:09,330 –> 00:14:11,598
It’s him!
It’s him! He’s comin’!
Laredo perkins is comin’.

178
00:14:13,668 –> 00:14:15,635
He’s comin’.

PALADIN
Laredo perkins is comin’?
Well, now, let’s everybody get up!
Get up. We’re all goin’ out and welcome ol’ Laredo perkins.
Yes, we’re all goin’ out there
and welcome laredo perkins.
Come on, lovely. Sinful.
Come on. Everybody out!
Come on! Come on. Let’s go.

185
00:15:00,999 –> 00:15:02,933
Welcome to cedar wells.

186
00:15:06,071 –> 00:15:09,640
Ask him not to bring
the rest of his men into town.

187
00:15:14,579 –> 00:15:17,814
If-if-if you could see your way clear, Mr. Perkins,
Not to bring your gang into town,
We-we’d sure appreciate it.

190
00:15:34,148 –> 00:15:35,766
Ah!

BOY
You gonna kill any of them today, Laredo?

L
Oh, depends.

193
00:16:08,232 –> 00:16:10,317
Suppose the whole
town chipped in
And paid the other one
to kill this one?

195
00:16:13,138 –> 00:16:14,372
Paladin?
But who’s gonna kill him?

PALADIN
Well, now, mr. Undertaker,
maybe I got a solution for you.
You come over here.

199
00:16:28,086 –> 00:16:30,687
Uh, j-just joshin’, that’s all.

PALADIN
I know where there’s a sheriff. The one you run out.
Maybe I can go
and get that sheriff.
I sure am not gonna draw
against that laredo perkins.
If I got that sheriff, I could
turn laredo perkins in to him,
Provided none of you smart and
clever people here in this town
Are gonna try and steal
that reward from me.
Is that the way we’re gonna
do it? Yes, that’s the way.
You go and get me my horse,
mr. Undertaker.

208
00:16:54,863 –> 00:16:56,463
Yes, sir.
Mm-hmm.

209
00:16:57,798 –> 00:17:01,051
And you figure you killed
more people than jesse james?

210
00:17:01,119 –> 00:17:02,569
Depends.

211
00:17:02,637 –> 00:17:04,321
How ’bout billy the kid?

212
00:17:04,389 –> 00:17:06,456
Theodore Thomas!

213
00:17:06,524 –> 00:17:08,792
Teddy, you get back into class.

214
00:17:08,859 –> 00:17:11,362
I don’t have to. You tell her, laredo.

215
00:17:11,429 –> 00:17:13,630
Tell me what? Well, I…

216
00:17:13,698 –> 00:17:16,700
These louts may be afraid of you, but I’m not.

217
00:17:16,768 –> 00:17:19,703
I try to teach these children a decent respect for learning,

218
00:17:19,771 –> 00:17:23,340
And then I have a killer undermine all my work.

219
00:17:23,408 –> 00:17:28,078
I don’t care what you do. I won’t take back a word of it.

220
00:17:28,145 –> 00:17:29,946
It’s… It’s because of…

221
00:17:30,014 –> 00:17:33,284
Depraved animals like you there are saloons and dance houses

222
00:17:33,351 –> 00:17:36,453
And only a dirty old warehouse for a school!

223
00:17:41,726 –> 00:17:43,594
You don’t understand.

224
00:17:43,661 –> 00:17:45,896
I-I-I do. Yes, I do.

225
00:17:45,964 –> 00:17:47,764
Ain’t you gonna kill her?

226
00:17:47,832 –> 00:17:49,366
No, no.

227
00:17:49,434 –> 00:17:51,768
You run to the gold chance and tell ’em

228
00:17:51,836 –> 00:17:53,703
I want all of them at the school.

229
00:17:53,771 –> 00:17:56,773
Make certain they bring paint and tools with ’em.

230
00:17:58,309 –> 00:18:01,812
Warehouse for a school. That’s a terrible thing.

231
00:18:01,880 –> 00:18:04,715
I don’t think you’re usin’
the right methods.

232
00:18:04,783 –> 00:18:08,351
Drill- is that all you do?
What?

233
00:18:08,419 –> 00:18:12,155
Now, my theory is…
Well, take shakespeare.

234
00:18:12,223 –> 00:18:13,890
Macbeth.

235
00:18:13,958 –> 00:18:17,794
You gotta make ’em see the three witches in their minds.

236
00:18:17,862 –> 00:18:21,498
Well, I… I never looked at it that way.

237
00:18:27,505 –> 00:18:30,774
Sure hope paladin gets back with that sheriff right quick.

238
00:18:30,842 –> 00:18:33,611
This one’s sure goin’ plumb crazy.

239
00:18:38,482 –> 00:18:40,417
Keep working out here.

240
00:18:44,389 –> 00:18:48,225
I’ve really got ’em workin’ now, miss ruth. They’re startin’ on the roof.

241
00:18:48,293 –> 00:18:50,594
Oh, that’s wonderful.
Thank you.

242
00:18:50,662 –> 00:18:53,731
Do you know this is the only full set of shakespeare

243
00:18:53,798 –> 00:18:55,632
North of santa fe?

244
00:18:55,700 –> 00:18:58,135
I brought it with me
from normal school.

245
00:18:58,202 –> 00:19:01,438
Oh, I had such great ideas, but…

246
00:19:01,505 –> 00:19:04,909
Well, how can you expect children to care about poetry

247
00:19:04,976 –> 00:19:07,745
When they live in a town like this?

248
00:19:09,647 –> 00:19:12,616
Now, you see, here’s what I mean.

249
00:19:12,684 –> 00:19:16,120
King henry, before the battle. Everything stands against him.

250
00:19:16,187 –> 00:19:19,923
But he’s not afraid. He gambles. He dares everything.

251
00:19:19,991 –> 00:19:21,925
Not just memorizing.

252
00:19:24,395 –> 00:19:27,965
“we few, we happy few, we band of brothers. for he today that sheds
his blood with me Shall be my brother.”

256
00:19:36,007 –> 00:19:38,008
Oh, it’s terrible.

257
00:19:38,076 –> 00:19:40,678
I’m sorry, miss ruth.
My voice is a little…

258
00:19:40,745 –> 00:19:42,012
Oh, no. No. No.

259
00:19:42,080 –> 00:19:45,515
I mean that you should be so vicious and depraved.

260
00:19:45,583 –> 00:19:48,552
Why, you would’ve made a wonderful teacher.

261
00:19:48,620 –> 00:19:50,588
Do you really think so? Yes.

262
00:19:50,655 –> 00:19:53,540
Well, at least we got that porch fixed.

263
00:19:53,608 –> 00:19:57,628
Yeah? Well, now you better go up there and fix the roof.

264
00:19:59,130 –> 00:20:00,897
Look.

265
00:20:03,801 –> 00:20:07,371
Oh! Mr. Perkins!
Mr. Perkins!

266
00:20:07,439 –> 00:20:10,307
Amos saint’s back.

267
00:20:50,214 –> 00:20:52,483
I’m lookin’ for laredo perkins.

268
00:20:52,550 –> 00:20:54,084
That’s him there.

269
00:20:56,420 –> 00:20:59,255
I hear you’re gonna ramrod this county.

270
00:20:59,357 –> 00:21:01,858
They say you got the fastest gun.

271
00:21:01,926 –> 00:21:04,361
You’re gonna have to kill me to prove it.

272
00:21:06,131 –> 00:21:09,616
You ain’t gonna nerve me off. I don’t care how many you killed.

273
00:21:09,684 –> 00:21:11,251
Now, make your play.

274
00:21:13,171 –> 00:21:16,673
Come on! Draw! What’s the matter with you?

275
00:21:34,959 –> 00:21:36,894
No firing pin.

276
00:21:39,097 –> 00:21:40,530
Boys,
I’m gonna kill me a real live badman.

278
00:21:43,501 –> 00:21:46,203
But first we’ll let
him sweat a bit. Huh?

279
00:21:51,459 –> 00:21:53,726
That’s amos saint!

280
00:21:54,879 –> 00:21:55,946
Move!

281
00:22:03,788 –> 00:22:05,655
Move.

282
00:22:08,259 –> 00:22:10,193
What are we gonna do?

PALADIN
Keep ’em busy.

284
00:22:30,815 –> 00:22:32,883
You’re cut off!
You can’t get out!

285
00:22:35,753 –> 00:22:38,054
Come on in and get me!

286
00:22:50,951 –> 00:22:52,602
You can’t do that.

287
00:22:53,805 –> 00:22:56,673
Only set of shakespeare
north of santa fe.
Laredo. Laredo!

PALADIN
Come on, laredo.
Laredo, if we’re gonna catch
that stage, we better move.

291
00:23:40,184 –> 00:23:44,021
Oh, no. He’s not traveling
with your sort anymore.

PALADIN
That true, laredo? You reformed?

293
00:23:49,060 –> 00:23:52,495
He’s never wearing a gun again.
Isn’t that right?

294
00:23:55,033 –> 00:23:58,568
He’s going to stay here and
build a new school and teach.

295
00:23:58,636 –> 00:23:59,903
Aren’t you?

296
00:23:59,971 –> 00:24:01,404
That’s right.
I’m gonna stay here and
build a new school and teach.
I’m through killin’.

PALADIN
Well, that’s what they all say.
Well, he means it.
And you…
You can just get out.

PALADIN
Well, yes, ma’am, miss ruth, if you say so.

303
00:24:25,963 –> 00:24:28,465
Ain’t you gonna
shoot it out with him?

PALADIN
Well, no. Laredo’s
hung up his gun.

305
00:24:31,902 –> 00:24:33,836
I know his sort.

306
00:24:33,904 –> 00:24:36,572
Once a killer, always a killer.

PALADIN
I don’t know, mr. Undertaker. I think maybe laredo’s had his day.

Hmmph.

309
00:24:45,766 –> 00:24:48,368
So long, sheriff.
So long.
